Sunday class at Pineapple Dance Studios

Given that it was the first sunny day in London for about five months we were a small group of committed yogis today (!)
We worked on going deeper with particular asanas. Side angle in particular we took from the first stage of supporting arm on front knee and top arm overhead, through open trichonasana arms, both arms over head, into bind and then up to bird of paradise. Via many vinyasas and twist variations. The whole class tackled the bird of paradise really nicely, there was lovely focus and not a small amount of determination. Lizard, pidgeon and bridge felt lovely after that.

New ImageHere is a picture of me practising bird of paradise at home before the class. An example of determination when you need to not wobble for the self-timer on the camera!

next cover class at Pineapple Dance Studios

Sunday 3rd March 12-1pm I’ll be covering Charlie’s Vinyasa class at Pineapple Dance Studios. I’ve been out of action for a while so this will be a good excuse to ramp up and should also be a lot of fun.
Today I went to Charlie’s class to get a feel for the flow and students and to refamiliarise with the venue. I wore leg warmers. And then I re-read my post from last time I went… ha ha.
Have good weeks x

Dynamic Flow cover class @ Pineapple Dance Studios

You gotta be careful what you wish for… Just last week I mentioned to a very close friend that I have a real passion to teach at Pineapple, and this evening I hopped in to do a cover class on short notice.
Pineapple Dance Studios, Covent Garden, are wonderful. I’ve been going to ballet classes there for a long time. The ‘ethos’ is about making dance available to all, so the studios, the teachers and the classes are very welcoming to all levels & abilities. And the most like being an extra in Fame The Musical you will ever feel: leg warmers are worn seriously, spare rooms are used for vocal warm-up, the music in the hip hop classes is ten million decibels, ballerinas mix with street dancers, you get the idea.
Practising and teaching yoga here is fantastic because it’s very lively, buzzy, and, well, dance-y. I find that really creative and also a challenge; a challenge to focus, centre, still, in a high energy environment.
I’m hoping to cover again, and I’ve applied for a regular class but in the meantime I highly recommend Charlie’s classes, which you can find on the timetable here.

Finding space

I’ve noticed that there’s a new way I ‘see’ my yoga practice at the moment. I’ve shared it in some of my classes but mostly I notice it on my own practice. It’s about finding space. The yoga asana and the meditative calmness of a yoga life create more space in the body and mind. And, like a large handbag, the biggest question that raises is what to put in that space! You have a choice, and to generalise I think the choice is – fill with tension or fill with freedom.

Keeps you lively thinking about that one :)

Do some beautiful forward bends, feel all the tension drip away from your body, breathe into the new spaces you’ve made, and ask yourself, what do I really want in there instead… It’s just heaven.
